Welcome to Greg's Site

Hello, and thanks to eveybody for being patient.  The Devil's Punchbowl is almost out.

This book took longer than I expected, but I feel really good about it.  Penn Cage moved in some new directions, not only surprising me, but getting surprised himself in the process.  This novel began as half of a planned Penn book but ended up being more complex on its own than many of my other novels.  It's not quite as literary as The Quiet Game, but I think it makes up for that in intensity.  Penn and his father have come a long way together, and their final book - Unwritten Laws - will bring them full circle, and hopefully say something about the South in the process.

I want to thank every reader who has sent me e-mail over the past year.  I am still reading them as they come in, but the volume has reached such a level that it's difficult to reply to more than a few, especially when I'm writing a book.  I'm now experimenting with a voice-recognition system to try to answer mails as I read them, but please don't take offense if I don't get to send an individual response.

Since finishing The Devil's Punchbowl, I've experienced a flood of new ideas, plus that greatest of luxuries - the time to revisit some old ideas I never got enough time to work on.  This is my favorite part of the year, when I actually have time to let my mind race through a new concept as it unfolds, or revisit one that current events have given fresh resonance.  I'm going to update this page more often over the summer, and add some of the snapshots I used in the writing of this book to the Photos page.  Some should be up by the end of this week.  Please email me and let me know what you think of the novel.  Readers of the Penn books seem to feel some ownership of the character, and I want to know if you feel he has been true to himself in this one.

Until then, happy reading!

Greg
